Here’s what we have scheduled this week at Seven Seas U
- Tues. Feb. 21: Preparing for a Passage with Beth Leonard
Whether you’re heading offshore for a couple hundred miles or a couple thousand, you and your boat need to be ready for anything the sea might throw at you. My husband, Evans Starzinger, and I learned that lesson the hard way on our first offshore passage from Newport to Bermuda in 1992. We left proud of our shipshape boat and storm-proof stowage. Four days later, we found ourselves seasick and miserable with sodden bedding, stinking clothes, a clogged bilge pump, water sloshing around the cabin sole, books cascading off of shelves, almost flat batteries and an an icebox awash in melted ice and spoiled food. In the wake of what turned out to be a common experience among first-time passagemakers, we re-engineered our stowage solutions and put together a pre-departure checklist. Over the course of more than 50 offshore passages, we have incorporated that checklist into a pre-passage routine that begins several weeks before clearing out. I will start this webinar by describing the essentials necessary aboard any boat for crew safety and well-being offshore – handgrips, jacklines, tether points, lee cloths, tie downs and fiddles among other things – and suggest easy ways to retrofit where your boat might be lacking. I will then walk you through the phases of passage preparation: passage planning, weather watching, pre-departure checklist, getting underway and getting acclimated. You will see everything that we do starting from a few weeks before leaving through the magical moment four or five days into the passage when we find our sea legs and move into our offshore rhythm. If you’re thinking about making your first passage, this webinar will help you avoid common mistakes and increase the chances of a successful, safe and enjoyable offshore experience
